100% Localism—Taiwanese Naive SculptorsAfter several integrations of foreign cultures and shifts of political regimes, a unique philosophy had formed in Taiwan's grassroots─a philosophy that teaches people to embrace life with optimism and face life with down-to-earth attitudes. This simple but yet sincere philosophy rooted deep in the land is one of the authentic and original characteristics of Taiwanese people. Several sculptors whose works are included in this exhibition are examples better illustrative of this Taiwanese characteristic than the misleading rendition of Taiwanese localism exaggerated by the entertainment and media industries. These sculptors have lift experiences closer to those of the general public; therefore their works present a less sophisticated and pretentious impression of human mind and also characteristics of the contemporary society. For example, Wu-Li Yu-ke, Lin Yuan and Chan Lung were originally laborers in the early agricultural society in Taiwan. Their creativity came from their own farming skills while their subjects were inspired by the rural life. With their unlimited imagination, they created works that allure viewers to a world drastically different from the reality. In addition, taking artists from the industrial city Kaohsiung, such as Wu Kuan-ying and Liu Ting-tsan, as examples, their works are enthusiastic responses to the characteristics of the modern industrial society. Their creations are spontaneous and based on their working and life experiences, displaying strong personal styles. Free from any connections with the academy or any art movement, their works show the characteristics of naive art.
