On August 17th, 2021, I attended a webinar CEFR B2 and EMI Best Practice held by Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages (WZU) in which the role of CEFR B2 in EMI best practice was discussed. The webinar invited four speakers including Dr. Sean McDonald from telc Language Tests, Dr. Janet I-Jane Weng from WZU, Thom Jones, Director from Atlantic College, Ireland, and Dr. Antonia Hsiu-chen Lin from WZU. To begin with, the moderator, Dr. Wan-Tsai Kung, Associate Professor and the chairperson of the Department of WZU Foreign Language Instruction kicked start the webinar following the introduction of all the speakers. The first presenter Dr. Sean McDonald coming from California with degrees from the University of California and University of Washington took Hungary for example. From 2020, high school graduates in Hungary are required to possess at least one upper-intermediate language (B2) certificate or a higher-level Hungarian Matura from one language to be able to meet new university admission standards. Until now, the system worked and university students had been expected to submit their language certificates in order to receive their degree. He also clarified the definition of B2 in all four skills and stated how teachers help students get there. Secondly, Dr. Janet I-Jane Weng from WZU gave the definition of EMI, discussed different opinions about EMI in Taiwan, shared Wenzao’s experiences and other EMI programs. In her talk, she emphasized the national policy to develop Taiwan into a bilingual nation by 2030 is not only a vision but a must for all the residents. For the third speaker Thom Jones, there was indeed a pity that he couldn’t deliver his speech due to a problem with his internet connection. The final speaker Dr. Antonia Hsiu-chen Lin from WZU shared her study on DPT (Dynamic Placement Test) at WZU. She implemented it through adaptive or line test by a smartphone, PC, or tablet. The language elements include listening and reading. She stressed the DPT is eco-friendly, less marking, and less paper consumption. Overall, the webinar is informative and I am satisfied with my experience from this webinar.
